New Year, New Me, Gluten Free
Among a number of resolutions I made this year (about half of which I have broken by week #2), is going gluten free for one month: January 4 - February 4.
For those that may not know what this means, gluten is a protein that exists in wheat, barley, rye, a number of additives, flavorings and thickening ingredients - so yea, lots of things delicious.
Although I don’t have Celiac Disease, the auto immune disease in which your stomach is damaged by eating gluten, I’ve picked up from numerous sources that a lot of people who may not have Celiac still have a gluten intolerance, and people that go gluten-free often feel healthier, more energized and generally “better.” Sounds good to me!
I’m always up for a challenge, would love to curb the frequency of my “funny tummy,” and want to support my roomie who does have Celiac on his journey to reduce gluten intake.
I’m 8 days in and have broken the diet twice. (I’ll have to say, both times were def worth it.) We ordered a keg at Superdive and I couldn’t resist, and all will power fled my body when “Pumpkin Pecan Waffles” stared at me in the face on the Penelope brunch menu.
So far I feel really good (minus a 24 hour stomach bug), but am thinking its due to the fact that I have cut out most processed foods from my diet more than the actual gluten. Either way… continuing on.
Must say though… can’t wait to celebrate my 24th by indulging in lots o’ carbs and beer.
